This is one of my favorite books hands down. It is one of the first really long books that I read back in high school and I was hooked. I've always enjoyed reading about Japan and this was right up my alley. The basic overview of the book is the story of John Blackthorne, an English pilot of a Dutch ship, wants to find Japan and open trade that has been up to then exclusively run by the Portuguese. He makes it to Japan, but with a damaged ship and no knowledge of the language, culture, or political climate. Blackthorne quickly becomes swept up in the plots, agenda, and whims of the main warlord Toranaga who is an extremely complicated character. Mariko is a aristocratic Japanese woman who is enlisted to help educate the "barbarian" anjin (pilot) so that he can communicate directly with Toranaga and provide him with a point of view other than that of the Portuguese. There is so much to this tale that I can't imagine giving a whole overview of this book, but it is so worth the time you will invest reading it. This is such a rich and complex story and if you enjoy stories of feudal Japan you can't go wrong with this one.
Happy Reading!
Monica
