Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh Review

SLAVE TO SENSATION is an introduction to a unique paranormal world. The idea of a group of humans who have enhanced psychic abilities is always good and the Psy have psychic abilities in spades. The Psy have also siphoned  out emotions through genetic engineering and intensive conditioning of their children. They are all connected to a central psychic network which is essential to each individual's survival. The comparison of Psy's to Vulcans and the Psy's network to the Borg's hive mind can't be avoided. Those comparisons were the first thing that came to mind when I first began the story. However, Singh definitely makes these themes her own. The idea of humans, changelings, and Psy all living together in a kind of symbiotic relationship makes for an interesting and complicated world.

Sascha is a Psy that is desperately trying to hide a flaw that is leaking out more and more every day. Sascha feels her time running out, the safeguards that she learned to erect at an early age are failing and it won't be long before others in the Psy network will be able to see them. Working with the changeling community will prove to be a greater challenge for Sascha as their strong emotions, affections, and unique abilities will be hard to maneuver around.

Lucas is the alpha of his pack and while working with Sascha begins to realize that she is not as cold and unattached from emotion as she wants everyone to believe. With his responsibilities to the members of his pack during a dangerous time for all changelings Lucas is surprised to find himself being pulled towards a possible mate, let alone one that is Psy. With an active serial killer taking young female changelings Lucas is not searching for a romantic distraction but fate doesn't wait for convenience.

SLAVE TO SENSATION is a good combination of paranormal and fantasy romance. It is multi-layered and will make you pay attention as you move through the story. There are a lot of moving parts in this one. Romance is a main factor in this story but it's not the most important. World building along with the explaining of how society is set up in the Psy-Changeling world was the most important part of the story for me. I will work my way through this series but it will definitely be at a slower pace. This is not a series that one can just tear through!

Happy Reading!

Synopsis

Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind-and none of the heart.

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation" - the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion - and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities - or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation.
