I didn't have the greatest reading month this February. I got things read, but I only loved one book out of the six that I attempted. However, I participated in #ReadSoulLit over on Instagram and it was a lot of fun. If you don't follow me over there, you can find me at @readermonica. I discovered some new to me Instagrammers to follow and of course I found some new books to add to my massive TBR list. I will be doing a post soon on some of the goodness that I found because of the challenges. I will definitely do #ReadSoulLit again next year and possibly find other challenges to do later this year.
Grace by Natashia Deon was by far my favorite read this month. It is wonderfully written. It is a tragic yet engrossing read that sucked me in right away. The cover is beautiful and the story is haunting and emotional.
An Accidental Affair by Eric Jerome Dickey just wasn't a good fit for me. I didn't like or care about any of the characters and the story felt lack luster. I did manage to finish it though.
Difficult Women by Roxane Gay was a fairly quick read. Very heavy themes in these short stories! You can read my short review here.
Everfiar by Nisi Shawl was hard for me to get into. Although I DNF'd it I do plan to go back to it eventually. I just couldn't seem to stay interested enough to keep going.
Bedrock Faith by Eric Charles May was a fun read that focuses on the complicated and sometimes crazy relationships that can be found in a close knit community. Stew Pot is crazy as a road lizard, but he shines a light on some of the faults of the people in the neighborhood that judged him before. This was the group read for #ReadSoulLit that I probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. I love the old school cover and it is a good indication of the theme of the book. I do plan on doing a full review on this one soon.
Killing Johnny Fay by Walter Mosley was for me a big fail. It was a hot mess of what felt like a man's pornographic fantasy. Ya'll know I enjoy some smutty sexy reads, but this was absolutely not for me and I DNF'd this sucker quick and with no regrets! I am so glad that this was one of my bargain Goodwill finds!
