This is truly one of the best books that I have ever read; it is also the first book by a black author that I read as a teenager. The beginning is set in Africa and I remember being swept away by the descriptions of the village and the people and customs that made up Kunta Kinte's world. The characters carries the reader along on so completely that it is hard to find good stopping points so that you can take a break to do pesky things like sleep and eat. This book is filled with great emotion and conflict yet despite it being originally published in the late 1970's this book, in my humble opinion will never loose it's relevance. If you've never read this classic American novel don't let the 688 page novel scare you off. It's a great read! The pages will carry you away and you will not regret it.
