Wail of the Banshees by Robert Poulin Review

This is a good example of not judging a book by it's cover. The cover art is not great and it may actually turn some readers off, but try to not look at the cover because what comes after it is just plain good writing. If you like your books a little on the spooky side this is a great book for you. I am a known and professed chicken and this book freaked me the heck out! My first mistake with this book was deciding to start it at night. I had a couple of hours before bedtime that I could read so I started this book. Good gravy! The first line in this book is "Getting your throat slit in a dark alley really sucks." Okay, what about that first line said "bedtime story" to me? Not a thing that's what. Now a smart chicken may have said to herself "Maybe I should wait and start this in the morning", but no this little chicken figured that surely it wouldn't be too bad and that this little chicken could handle it. Nuh huh, not so much. Stupid chicken keeps reading and things just keep getting worse and worse. Poulin's writing is so descriptive and vivid that chicken can see the scenes playing out in her mind like a movie. This is a good thing if you're not a big, fat, cry baby chicken, but as I mentioned before, I'm a chicken.

Mistake number two; stupid chicken thinks that if she just keeps reading until she gets to a slower and  less dramatic part of the book it would be fine to stop there and still be able to sleep peacefully. Stupid chicken should have known better...stupid chicken dreams of dark back alleys, shades, specters, and all manner of evil swirling around and chasing stupid chicken through the dilapidated streets of Philadelphia. Poulin wrote a very convincing and well developed story and successfully pulled this little chicken into his very disturbing yet entertaining world.

This story is very much worth the read and at $2.99 is a good deal to boot. This story is not Stephen King scary, but it did give me chills and obviously nightmares. If you are looking for a light romp through a paranormal world this is not it, but if you are looking for a really good action book with a bit of spine tingler you will find it in this book.

Happy Reading!

Synopsis

My name is Veronika Kane and dying, dying was just the beginning.

How was I supposed to know that getting smashed on my 21st birthday would lead me to becoming the 9th victim of a serial killer that’s been stalking Philadelphia’s streets for months? Now I’m a ghost and unlife is pretty scary. Reapers, wraiths, ghouls, gargoyles: all of the story book monsters that I thought were fairy tales are real! On top of it all, the powers that be in the ghost world want to enslave me and use me in their own diabolical plot to manipulate the people of the living world. Too bad I didn’t turn out to be the kind of ghost they wanted me to be, and I’m not about to let them turn me into one of their puppets. These ghosts are responsible for my murder and the murders of eight other women.
